Aron D.

This spring, San Francisco Bay University celebrates the achievements of its graduating class, which includes a standout student, Aron Dagniew. A Computer Science Master’s student with a knack for problem-solving, Dagniew recently accepted a role at Amazon as a Data Center Operations Technician with Amazon Web Services (AWS), where he will be responsible for maintaining server infrastructure.

When Dagniew first considered SFBU, a scholarship offer opened the door. But what kept him here and helped him thrive was much more than financial support: “SFBU is a smaller university, but it’s growing,” Dagniew shares. “You meet a lot of people from different backgrounds, and the professors really care. One of my professors pushed us hard. It was challenging, but it helped me grow.”

Dagniew began his academic journey in engineering but ultimately found his path in computer science, which he viewed as a gateway to innovation and versatility. As part of his coursework, Dagniew contributed to several full-stack, team-based projects that combined technical depth with real-world application. These included a Web-Based Security Assessment Toolkit using FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and Docker, which integrated AI-powered vulnerability detection and a gesture-detection system powered by computer vision. He also worked on an AI Teaching Assistant and a culturally inspired “Habesha Runner” game.

“Working in teams taught me how to collaborate across different roles and perspectives, which I now apply daily,” he says. In addition to project work, Dagniew completed cloud-based assignments and explored data analytics tools used to interpret and apply technical insights – all of which strengthened his readiness for a fast-paced, technical career.

In addition to his coursework, Dagniew served as a student assistant, contributing his organizational, email marketing, and graphic design skills to the Student Affairs team. “I quickly realized how much goes into events: marketing, posters, food, logistics. It taught me a lot about teamwork and planning.”

He also credits his time at SFBU with improving his public speaking and time management skills, qualities that played a major role in landing his new job.

Outside of school, Dagniew enjoys playing basketball with friends and spending time around San Francisco. He brings the same energy and curiosity to his personal life as he does to his academic and professional pursuits.

When asked what encouragement he would give to prospective students, Dagniew didn't hesitate: “I would 100% recommend SFBU. There are great resources on campus, and people you can talk to if you're going through something. The community makes the environment feel alive and welcoming.”

With his new role at Amazon, Dagniew is just getting started. “In a few years, I want to move into management — whether in software engineering or security. This role is my starting point. It’s where I’ll gain experience and build toward my goals.”

San Francisco Bay University takes immense pride in watching its students succeed beyond the classroom. Dagniew’s story is one of diligence, opportunity, and growth, and it is a testament to what’s possible when potential meets the right environment.
