Luke Pamaos seeks growth in all aspects of his life. He is proud of hitting a personal record at the gym, enjoys working on his public speaking skills through the Toastmasters Club, builds bridges in the community through volunteer work, and is also eager to improve his coding skills, master coding languages, and become proficient in the tools that will allow him to work at top tech companies such as Google, Apple, or Amazon.
As a first-year student pursuing a bachelor’s in computer science at San Francisco Bay University, Luke is deeply motivated by the opportunities available at the university and the resources that empower him to pursue his dreams.
“When I reviewed SFBU’s mission and goals, I found it very empowering and felt like they aligned with my goals to eventually work in Silicon Valley,” Luke shared.
Awarded the prestigious President's Scholarship, this scholarship not only provides financial support but also fuels Luke’s desire to make the most of his time at SFBU, both academically and personally.
As someone who dreams of working in Silicon Valley and contributing to the tech industry, SFBU’s emphasis on nurturing talent for the tech world made it the perfect place to start his academic journey.
“Academically, it has been both challenging and rewarding,” Luke said. “I’ve taken classes such as Data Structures with Dr. Akhoirshida, they’ve provided a solid foundation in computer science.” Luke appreciates his career-focused courses, which have given practical insights into the tech industry. In particular, he names Professor Michael Leinhos as one of his favorite professors, because his teaching style encourages students to think critically and apply what they learn to real-world scenarios.
Beyond academics, Luke has been actively involved in a number of campus activities that allow him to give back and grow as an individual. He is a member of the Volunteer Club, participating in community service projects like coastal clean-ups. Luke is also part of the Toastmasters Club, where he works on improving his public speaking skills and building confidence.
“I’ve always wanted to improve my public speaking skills,” Luke said, “so Toastmasters has provided a great platform to develop this skill in a supportive environment.”
Outside of his on-campus involvement, Luke enjoys reading, especially fiction, horror, and mystery novels, often in the library, which allows him to unwind and expand his creativity. One of the things Luke loves most about SFBU is the campus environment.
“The student lounge is a great place to relax, meet people, and unwind after a long day of classes,” Luke shared. Whether it's playing billiards, enjoying some downtime with friends, or simply hanging out with classmates, the lounge fosters a strong sense of community. “I also love how diverse the school body is,” Luke continued, as he has had the opportunity to meet people from various backgrounds, including students from the Philippines and Bohol, which has enriched his understanding of different cultures and perspectives.
When asked why Luke would recommend SFBU to other students, Luke emphasized SFBU’s proximity to Silicon Valley, the heart of the tech industry. This location offers unmatched opportunities for students to develop their skills and network with professionals in the field. SFBU also organizes trips to major tech companies like Google, Intel, and Tesla, providing students with invaluable in-person experiences that can shape their careers.
“For those passionate about tech and looking for an environment that nurtures growth and success,” Luke said confidently, “SFBU is the place to be.”
Between the academic rigor, the diverse and supportive community, and the unparalleled opportunities for career development, SFBU is providing Luke with the tools and experiences he needs to achieve his goals. Luke looks forward to the next few years, knowing that SFBU will continue to be a place where he can grow, contribute, and work toward a successful future in the tech industry.
