All students must have health insurance coverage for each term they are enrolled in and during semester breaks. Students enrolled in a 100% online modality are exempt from this health insurance requirement. Beginning September 1, 2024, SFBU offers international students health insurance coverage through Cigna Healthcare via International Student Insurance.

Domestic students seeking health coverage are encouraged to visit the following website to identify options, www.ehealthinsurance.com or https://www.dhcs.ca.gov/individuals/Pages/MMCDHealthPlanDir.aspx.

Students with Pre-Existing Health Insurance (Domestic and Non F-1 visa holders)

If you have valid U.S. health insurance, your insurance plan documents must be uploaded to your Student Portal before your course registration.

When going to an in-network provider, discounts will apply so you will pay less out-of-pocket. If you go to an out-of-network provider, you may need to pay for the visit upfront, and then file a claim to be reimbursed for your eligible expenses.

You will only need to file a claim if you paid for your visit or any prescription medication out of pocket. You will be able to submit your claim, along with any itemized receipts, bills, medical notes, etc. right online through Cigna Envoy.

If you were not required to pay for your visit upfront, the doctor's office or hospital should submit the claim directly for processing. Once your claim has been processed, or if any additional information, like an Accident Questionnaire or medical records, are requested, you’ll receive an email letting you know to log in to your Cigna Envoy account to check on the status.

Please note: You will only receive an email notification if you’ve already registered for your Cigna Envoy account. We recommend registering for your Cigna Envoy account as soon as possible!
